A brief history of the National Day of Prayer

1775 - the Continental Congress "designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation"

February 19, 1795 -George Washington proclaimed a day of public thanksgiving and prayer

1808 - Thomas Jefferson opposed national days of prayer by the Federal Government.

1813 - James Madison proclaimed a day of prayer, then later recanted the action saying "They seem to imply and certainly nourish the erroneous idea of a national religion."

March 30, 1865 - Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution which called for a day of fasting and prayer during the Civil War.

April 17, 1952 - President Harry S. Truman signed a bill proclaiming a National Day of Prayer. Each President would select the day.

May 5, 1988 - President Ronald Reagan signed a bill which made the first Thursday in May the National Day of Prayer.
